Erewash Borough Council has introduced a new service to its website, that will help people with reading difficulties and sight impairments to access information and services. Visitors to the council’s website at www.erewash.gov.uk can now listen to the written content using a free 'speech enabling' tool called Browsealoud - free software that anyone can download onto their personal computer.
Once this has been downloaded the user can then visit the internet and when they come across a Browsealoud enabled website, like the council’s, the information will be read out when the mouse cursor is hovered over text.
Browsealoud software is free to download at www.browsealoud.com. Users can customise the voice and speed to meet their own preferences, and even have the text boldly displayed as it is read. Further details on how to access Browsealoud, including an introductory audio file describing the service, are available through the home page of Erewash Borough Council’s website www.erewash.gov.uk
