New befriending service for people in Erewash with long term health conditions

Self Help UK, has been funded by Southern Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group to develop a new befriending project in Derby.  The Tandem Project offer a short-term befriending service for people living in Derby City and Erewash who are affected by a long-term health condition and are experiencing social isolation.

The project is currently in its initial stages and is recruiting and training volunteers. The aim of this project is to help those who are living with a long-term health condition and feeling isolated and lonely, to access support to help them reconnect with other people and improve their wellbeing.

The Tandem service will offer a range of support including:

  • Visiting someone at home to build a trusting supportive relationship
  • Offering support via the telephone
  • Accompanying someone to self-help groups and social activities
  • Accompanying someone to GP or Hospital appointments
  • Supporting someone to access training or volunteering opportunities

All volunteers will be given specific induction training to ensure they feel confident to undertake the role and will be DBS checked.  The first training session will be on Saturday 4 March in Derby City Centre.  Places are limited so to find out more or to book your place please contact Vicki Jones, the Tandem Project Coordinator.

Vicki Jones, Tandem Project Coordinator, believes that this work will give people in Derby and Erewash diagnosed with a long-term health condition, support to feel less lonely and isolated. “There is evidence that loneliness and social isolation are harmful to health.  Research shows that lacking social connections is as damaging to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.  Social networks and friendships not only have an impact on reducing the risk of mortality or developing certain diseases but they also help individuals to cope better with their condition.“  Source:
