The first wedding ceremony has taken place at Ilkeston Town Hall, the new 'home' of Ilkeston Register Office.

Derbyshire County Council has relocated the registrar service from its former base on Lord Haddon Road after the building became too expensive to maintain and repair.

Register Office staff moved into their new offices in the old part of the historic town hall on Monday 1st September 2014 and the first wedding took place on Friday 5th September 2014. To mark the occasion, the newlyweds were given a crystal vase engraved with the borough council's coat of arms.

Councillor Carol Hart, Erewash Borough Council's Deputy Leader and Lead Member for Community Engagement, said:"We are delighted that we have been able to provide this new and improved home for Ilkeston Register Office and we look forward to welcoming many more weddings at the Town Hall.'

The Register Office now offers couples the choice of three ceremony rooms, including the Mayor's Parlour. The service can be contacted on 01629 531344 or 01629 531382, Mon-Fri 9.30am-1pm and 2pm-4.30pm
