The Cotmanhay and Shipley View Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team has been working with Year Six students at Granby Junior School to teach them about road safety, underage drinking and the elements of a positive community.
The team visited students on Friday, 28th May to talk to them about several important issues.
PCSO Robert Webb said: “Our work today follows on from a cell visit last week when all of the Year Six children came to Ilkeston Police Station to look around the custody suite and to learn more about the role of the police within our community.
“Today we have focused on a road safety message when talking to the children, such as crossing the road safely and always putting on a seat belt when travelling in a car.
PC Joanne Osbaldeston, Safer Neighbourhood Youth Officer for Ilkeston, has also discussed some important issues about going to senior school, such as underage drinking and the law surrounding knives and BB guns. Alongside this work, Years 7, 8 and 9 students from Bennerley Business and Enterprise College performed a play about road safety using physical theatre.
Ashley Ellerby, Head of Performing Arts, said: “Physical theatre means that the students use their bodies to produce a scene or an object, such as a bike or car. Granby Junior School contacted us about performing a road safety play and so I set up an after school group to work on this project.
“The kids created all of the scenes themselves, so they were told to form into a certain object, such as a zebra crossing, and then all of the creative ideas came from them to bring the scene to life.”
PCSO Julie Allen added: “The physical theatre method has been a totally new way of showing the children the dangers of the road and has clearly reiterated the things we have spoken to them about in the classroom today.
“We hope that our ongoing work with children in the Cotmanhay area will help them to stay safe when walking or cycling in the community.”
