A new art gallery in Ilkeston has been opened with the aim to represent art and artists in the local area and surrounding district, and in doing so, provide a range of services connected to the visual arts.
The venue exists to identify new talent and promote new artists, many of whom just want to paint, and would rather not get involved in the marketing side. Submissions can be sent in photo form or with a maximum of three pictures via the gallery website, with all submitting artists getting their details registered on a database even if works aren't displayed.
The gallery has a large space upstairs which is hoped will be opened for use as studios, and there are also plans to install a kiln if there is sufficient interest in both ideas from artists in the area.
The building being used was originally a corset shop when first built, a fact discovered after a front step was uncovered with a mosaic floor spelling out 'The Corset Shop'. It had been covered up for many years with an old carpet, but has been restored ready for the gallery opening.
