Bob StaveleyOfficers from the Ilkeston Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team are working to increase public awareness of the legislation surrounding the use of push bikes in the town centre.
Local officers have increased patrols of the pedestrian area of Bath Street and the market place following complaints from the public.
PC Steve Harper said: “We have received several complaints from shoppers about cyclists riding quickly and dangerously in the area. We want to make people aware that bikes must not be ridden on Bath Street or the market place between 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday. After this period, bikes can be used but must still be travelling safely and riders must show consideration to other people.
“We would also like to remind cyclists that Bath Street is one way only, and often bikes are travelling in the wrong direction during busy shopping times. These cyclists sometimes weave in and out of shoppers and a number of near misses have been reported to us over the last few months.
“We will be regularly patrolling Bath Street and the market place to monitor this issue and action will be taken against anyone in breach of the laws of the pedestrian zone.
“The legislation is there for a reason, to help protect shoppers and people walking through the area, so please think of the safety aspects and dismount from your bike whenever there are a lot of people around, especially between 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday.”
