Safer Neighbourhood officers in Long Eaton have teamed up with the Probation Service’s Community Payback workers to tackle a priority issue in the local area. Derbyshire Probation Community Payback team have arranged for offenders on unpaid work to help to clean and re-paint areas that have attracted graffiti and criminal damage.
PC Nicola Walker said: “The first time Community Payback assisted us with a graffiti clean-up was in November 2009, when graffiti at the rear of the shops on High Street, Long Eaton was designated as a priority problem by members of the community.
“The public told us that the graffiti that had accumulated in this area over a number of years was putting people off visiting Long Eaton by giving the impression that the town was run down.
“Offenders on Community Payback became involved and did an excellent job in cleaning up the problem. Since then, they have also cleaned graffiti off the walls surrounding the Focus car park on Chapel Street, the Home Bargains car park on Albert Road, at the rear of Asda on Midland Street and several other locations around the town centre.”
Another method that has been used to clean graffiti in Long Eaton is Restorative Justice. This means that the individuals responsible for graffiti in the area are made to clean it off, in line with the victim’s wishes.
Since the introduction of Restorative Justice to Derbyshire in April 2009, seven offenders in the Long Eaton community have been made to clean off graffiti to help improve the local environment.
PC Walker continued: “The work of the Community Payback team and those individuals involved in Restorative Justice has had a hugely positive affect on the local area, making it look much cleaner. We have also been pleased that graffiti has not returned to the newly cleaned areas and the offenders involved in Restorative Justice have told us that they have learnt their lesson because cleaning graffiti off the walls is certainly not an easy task.
“We hope that residents of the Long Eaton area are pleased with the work that has been carried out to clean up graffiti in the neighbourhood, and that this excellent partnership work between the police and the Probation Service has had a positive affect on the community.”

‘Community Payback’ is the term for compulsory unpaid work hours given as a punishment to offenders as part of a community sentence. This punishment involves regular, physical, supervised work on projects that benefit local communities. The work can include removing graffiti, picking up litter, creating, repairing or re-decorating community areas or facilities and clearing undergrowth or paths. Unpaid work requirements can be between 40 and 300 hours.
Offenders wear bright orange high-visibility jackets marked with ‘Community Payback’ while they are working.
