Bob StaveleyThe protective railings around Long Eaton’s War Memorial will remain in place as part of the major Market Place makeover, Erewash Borough Council which was recently announced.
Project officers had considered removing the rails during work to transform the Market Place into a real centre piece and breathe new life into the town centre. But following talks with residents and representatives of the local Royal British Legions branch, the Council has made it clear that it supports the view that the railings should stay.
Councillor Chris Corbett, Leader of Erewash Borough Council, said: “I am delighted to be able to confirm that the railings around the Cenotaph will remain in place. It is clear that people regard them as a part of the war memorial and we agree with them completely.
“We had considered taking them away as part of the overall plan to recreate a historic ‘look’ for the whole area - but following discussions with many people on the project design, we are happy to keep them.”
The Cenotaph stands in the old Market Place in front of St Laurence’s Church and it was felt by many people that removing the railings could make the memorial vulnerable to possible vandalism and a general lack of respect.
Work on the four-month Market Place makeover is well underway and is the latest phase of the Council’s major Long Eaton Townscape Heritage Initiative, which is a Lottery-funded project that has already seen the Lime Grove area restored to its former glory.
Once work is completed, the Market Place will have a welcoming and attractive new image and will be able to host community events for people of all ages and give a new lease of life to the town’s market.
