Preview of new Children's Centre

A healthy living event held at Scargill Primary School in Beech Lane has given local people a sneak preview of the new West Hallam Children's Centre which is scheduled to open in October.

Food tasting, growing and cooking activities were available, with children being given help and support to get a better understanding of food science and preparation.   The new centre will offer a range of useful services for parents and families all under one roof.

There are more than 50 children's centres across the county, operated by the county council.

New Advice Service For Consumer Issues

Anyone with consumer issues is being encouraging to attend West Hallam Medical Centre on the first and fourth Tuesday of every month for a free advice session.  Erewash Citizens' Advice Bureau will hold the session from 9:00am until Noon and all are welcome to attend.

Dell Badminton Club Is Seeking New Members

Dell Badminton Club is seeking new members.  The group meets every Wednesday at West Hallam Community Centre, Station Road, from 8:00pm-10:00pm.  For more details, contact club secretary Sue Selby on 0115 930 6742 or just turn up on a Wednesday.

Book Released By The Former Gardener Of Brian Clough

A West Hallam man has released a book which includes reference to his work as a gardener for legendary football manager Brian Clough.  Peter Smith looked after Clough’s garden for 10 years, and was once given the manager’s OBE as a gift, only to return it.  The book also refers to time spent drinking coffee and chatting.  ‘Tales from Cloughie’s Garden’ is available from Mr. Smith’s home 104, Hallam Way, West Hallam DE7 6LE at £3.95, £4.50 including postage and packing.  

Local Brownie Pack Is Looking For New Members

The local brownie pack is appealing for new members.  West Hallam Brownies offer girls aged from seven to ten years regular sessions on Thursday evenings during term time at West Hallam Methodist Church Hall, High Lane West from 6:15pm.  If you’re interested in joining the group, speak to Stella Beaumont or Lynda Riley at the hall on Thursday between 6:15pm and 7:45pm.

West Hallam Drama Group Is Looking For New Members

West Hallam Drama Group is looking for new members to take part in future productions.  Persons over 18 with interest in any aspect of drama, are being encouraged to join, including production, promotion and publicity, acting, props and set design.  The group meets in the upper room of the Punch Bowl Inn every Thursday from 8:00pm.  A variety of plays are produced each year, usually in May and November.  Call Tim Ainsworth on 0115 930 3340 for more information.

Enthusiasts Encouraged To Join West Hallam Amateur Gardening Society

Green fingered enthusiasts are being encouraged to join the West Hallam and District Amateur Gardening Society.  The group meets on the third Monday of each month, at West Hallam Methodist Church, High Lane West.

West Hallam Toddler Group

West Hallam Toddler Group is now based at the new Powtrell Community Centre in Beech Lane.  Sessions run on Mondays from 9:30am to 11:30am.  A range of toys and activities are available whilst carers and parents can also enjoy a drink and a snack.  For further information on the sessions, call 07985 171 310.

West Hallam Nutbrook Brewery

West Hallam's Nutbrook Brewery produced a limited amount of a specially brewed beer for a festival held at a reknowned Derby pub.  Mellow Fellow was produced for the Royal Standard Beer Festival held in late November in Exeter Street.  It is thought that just nine gallons of the brew were produced.
