Ockbrook Redhill WI reports...

Another cup to clean!!  No not the world cup but the one we won at the County Show.   We came first in the Home Economics Co-operative Competition with our exhibit ‘Burns Night’, the theme being Feasts and Festivals.   On the 19th June Anne Ramsden put in a lot of hard work to make a luncheon at her house so successful, the profit going into the W I funds.   A super meal enjoyed by everyone who attended.

At our last meeting we were entertained by Jo Carter with her portrayal of a lady’s maid from the Victorian Times.   Joanne took us through a weekend when the future king, then Prince Edward, attended Warwick Castle in 1898, and the party lasted 11 days.   Some weekend!    She also told us about the language of the fans where ladies would flutter their eyelashes and beckon with their fans.   More seductive and interesting than a jerk of the thumb.   In her ‘other life’ Joanne is a costumed guide at such places as Warwick Castle and Caulk Abbey.

After our Craft and Produce Fair on the 17th July we are having a bit of a rest as we do not have a meeting in August.  However, we are having a beetle drive on the 16th August in the Moravian Lecture Hall, Ockbrook at 7:30pm.   All are welcome to attend this popular evening, including the children.  Entry is £2 for Adults, £1 for Children.  Tickets can be obtained from Pauline Cassere by calling 01332 671984.    The next meeting of the Ockbrook WI is on 13th September in the Parish Hall, Ockbrook, starting at 7:30pm.  The topic of the evening will be Greenwood Owls by Jim Slaney.

A date for the diary in October at the Lecture Hall is on 26th October when a Whist Drive will be held!  More details to come.  Keep looking and listening!
