Leighton Buzzard 25 - 29 Ilkeston - Saturday 28th January 2012
Midlands 1 East
After a recent poor run of form, Ilkeston Rugby Club got back to winning ways on the road last weekend, with a four point victory over Leighton Buzzard at Wrights Meadow. A total of 10 tries were spread across the game, equally shared, with Jono Falls' conversions making the difference for the Elks. But it was the hosts who took control early on, striding to a 10-0 lead before Greg Taylor set up his brother Lewis for a converted try. But Leighton Buzzard went further into the ascendancy - 15-7 up at the half time whistle.
After the break though, Ilkeston upped the ante, Lewis Taylor's 2nd try helping out with Falls' touchline conversion coming after Tom McKelvey crashed over in the corner of the pitch. Elliott Gwynne ticked the scoreline over with a touch down and despite a fightback from the Buzzards, Ilkeston kept them at bay, Greg Taylor scoring at the end to make sure the lead was retained at ultimately, the win secured.
TRIP OUT AND TRIP UP FOR ELKS:
Towcestrians 43-5 Ilkeston - Saturday 21st January 2012
Midlands 1 East
The Elks are suffering a poor run of form of late, and fell to their third consecutive defeat last weekend, and by some margin - 43-5 to Towcestrians. There were reasons for the defeat - some key players missing and another went after just 17 minutes when Gordon Pringle left the field of play only to be followed by Dan Taylor and Tom McKelvey early in the 2nd period.
A sloping pitch at Towcester was clearly something the hosts knew well and played it very much to their advantage, opening the scoring after 15 minutes, but Ilkeston repsonded - JJ Connolly's long pass to Taylor allowed him to side step into the corner and Ilkeston found some form for around 20 minutes and it looked like the game could go the Elks way. However, the Towcestrians had other ideas and scored two quick tries to numb Ilkeston's efforts and were 19-5 up at the break.
A good start to the 2nd half for Ilkeston then petered out as the hosts regained control. The injuries continued to mount for Ilkeston - Ben Wells suffered concussion in a clash, and the Elks played the game out with just 14 men over the closing 20 minutes, which allowed the hosts to run in three tries. There were barely any signs of an Ilkeston fight back although Josh Meakin scrummed well and worked hard to begin staking a claim to a future start. Towcestrians meanwhile had done enough to register a season double over the Elks having won 26-19 at the Stute back in October..
ELKS IN SATURDAY CUP SEMI-FINAL: The Derbyshire Cup Rugby Semi-Final between Ilkeston and Derby will be played at The Stute on Saturday 25th February with a 2:15pm kick off.
HOME DEFEAT FOR ELKS:
Ilkeston 19 - 34 Loughborough - Saturday 14th January 2012
Midlands 1 East
Ilkeston handed a guilt edged opportunity to take a victory at The Stute last weekend - an opportunity that Loughborough grasped with both hands. Within the first half hour, the Leicestershire side had carved out a 27-0 lead over an Elks side which then looked unlikely to regain their composure and pull off a fightback.
Poor kicking from hand has been the catalyst for recent problems in Ilkeston's game play and this was the same again as Loughborough took advantage as early as the fifth minute, before adding more throughout the opening half hour, three more tries, two of which were converted, and a penalty.
Ilkeston scored just before the break - Simon Bennett staking a claim to the try after a forced line out by the forwards. Jake Lamb converted to put 7 on the board, and although the 2nd half saw better play by Ilkeston, the damage had been done, although Ben Gatehouse did power through to score just after the break with Lamb adding the extras. Ilkeston narrows the gap 20 minutes from time - Haigh, Fowkes and Gwyne working well and feeding Greg Taylor who duly scored in the corner.
That was to be as close the gap could be narrowed and victory was assured for the visitors with a final try two minutes from the final whistle.
