Appointment of new Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive

The Fire Authority Brigade Managers’ Appointment Panel, supported by the Chief Constable of Derbyshire, has conducted the final interview process for the appointment of the new Chief Fire Officer/Chief Executive for Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service.

Councillor Kevin Buttery, the Chair of the Fire & Rescue Authority has announced that Deputy Chief Fire Officer Gavin Tomlinson will take up position as the new Chief on the 6 September 2019, when the current Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive Terry McDermott retires from the Service.

Speaking following the appointment, Councillor Buttery said: “I’m delighted to announce the appointment of Gavin Tomlinson as the new Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive for Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service.

“Gavin, who was born and raised in Belper, Derbyshire, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role. He commenced his career with Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service in 1993, serving as a firefighter at various locations across the County before progressing to the rank of Deputy Chief Fire officer in 2015. His knowledge of the county and partnering organisations is second to none.

“Gavin will take over the role of Chief Fire Officer in September when the current Chief, Terry McDermott, retires from Service.  I’d like to personally thank Terry for his dedication and commitment to the Service and for leading a workforce that is both innovative and passionate about keeping our communities safe.”

During his career, Gavin has served in a range of roles including Fire Protection and Training. He has amassed a broad range of experience and served his entire career in Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Gavin Tomlinson said: “I am immensely honoured to have been appointed as the new Chief Fire Officer for Derbyshire, a county that I am incredibly proud of.  I look forward to leading a Service that is committed to protecting our communities and providing a first class service to the people of Derbyshire.”
