Borough Conservative MP encourages students to 'defy' possible Government festive season 'stay put' instructions

An MP representing part of the Erewash borough has told students to go against the Government if it instructs them that they cannot return home for Christmas.

The Mid-Derbyshire seat covers Little Eaton and Breadsall, Ockbrook and Borrowash, Stanley, West Hallam and Dale Abbey and is held by Conservative Minister Pauline Latham.

Speaking in the Commons as part of a House of Commons debate whilst lending her support to give MPs more of a say in rules concerning the Coronavirus pandemic, she advised that students should defy the Government if necessary.

Ms Latham said that she felt that Parliament was not being given the opportunity to decide if decisions over restrictions made by the Government were being made correctly and was heard saying: "To be told [that students] cannot go and see their own family at Christmas, probably, is outrageous...and I would say to those students probably defy what government says, go home and see your family."

Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock has previously refused to rule out a ban on students going home for the festive season but said that he expected an ability to do so.
