Borough council suspends car parking charges for all

Published on: Tuesday, 31st March 2020

Erewash Borough Council has suspended all parking charges with immediate effect.

The authority originally moved to offer the free scheme for NHS health workers, social care workers, NHS volunteers and other key public workers.  The move was aimed at helping and showing appreciation for key workers who need to park in the borough’s car parks for long periods as they continue to provide vital services but in offering this, the authority omitted to mention how those qualifying could avoid receiving a parking ticket.

The original statement from Erewash Borough Council said: 'The council is working extremely hard to protect key services in support of our residents and businesses, however there is likely to be some disruption due to the impact of the coronavirus.'

Erewash Sound subsequently contacted the borough council to clarify how tickets could be avoided for key workers, but received the response that a decision had been taken for parking charges to be suspended at ALL of its car parks, including the Long Eaton Railway Station commuter car park.

A further statement said that the move was still aimed at helping and showing appreciation for key workers such as NHS health workers, social care workers and NHS volunteers.  Councillor Carol Hart, Leader of Erewash Borough Council, said: “Whilst there was already free parking for NHS workers, social care workers and NHS volunteers we have now decided to extend the free parking to all of our residents in all of our car parks.  Parking will be free in all of the council’s car parks including the one at Long Eaton Train Station.”
