Chamber reacts to increased political uncertainty

The Chief Executive at East Midlands Chamber, the body representing the business interests of companies in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire & Leicestershire, has issued a statement in response to recent developments in Westminster, including calls to block a no-deal Brexit and the announcement that Government will look to suspend Parliament.

Scott Knowles said: “This latest in a long line of political uncertainties acts as a microcosm for what businesses here in the East Midlands and across the UK have been experiencing for over three years.

“While no one expected the journey to leaving the European Union would be an easy one, the moves and counter moves in Westminster continue to offer more questions than answers, with businesses effectively operating blindfolded as they attempt to plan in the short, medium and long term. Businesses feel like Westminster is playing an endless game of political chess, while their futures and the health of the UK economy hang in the balance.

“High level discussions such as those of the past few days fail to recognise the very real and tangible effect that such uncertainty is having on the ground every day for our businesses, which carry on stoically but nevertheless are in real need of clarity.

“The top priority for businesses and the economy is still to avoid a messy and disorderly exit from the EU on 31 October - businesses are the creators of wealth, the glue that binds our communities, and we would once again call on Government and decision-makers to keep the needs of business at the very forefront of their thinking as the UK negotiates a turbulent period leading up to and following the 31 October Brexit deadline.”
