Charter Fair stays the same

Ilkeston’s historic Charter Fair will remain a three-day event after Erewash borough councillors rejected a request from The Showmen’s Guild to extend it by a day.

A meeting of Council Executive held in Ilkeston on Tuesday 16th July ruled that the fair, which ends on a Saturday night, should not be allowed to open on the Sunday.

The decision came as councillors discussed the results of a widespread 12-week public consultation which showed residents in the immediate surroundings of the Charter Fair were overwhelmingly against an extra day.

The consultation, held earlier this year. included a direct mailshot to more than 1,000 households and businesses in the immediate surroundings of the Charter Fair, while the wider public were able to give their views through online consultation.

The overall response saw 47% against extending the fair and 42% in favour, but in the areas closest to the town centre, 64% were against it and 32% in favour.

The consultation produced one of the largest responses received by the council, with many residents taking time to provide detailed comments on why they were against the Showmen’s Guild request.

Councillor Mike Wallis, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Culture and Leisure, said: “We have reviewed all the comments sent to us, both in writing and on-line.  The response to our request for residents to share their views was outstanding and I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to provide us with very informative views.  It is this response that has helped us make this decision – the fair will stay in its traditional three-day format.”
