Derby College Group (DCG) apprentice Jack Ellis (pictured left) has clinched a silver medal in the national finals of the Guild of Bricklayers skills competition held in Liverpool.

Jack Ellis (18) from Brailsford, who works for Neil Building and Joinery Services, qualified for the prestigious competition after winning the regional senior competition held recently at Grantham College.

The former JCB Academy student attends DCG’s Ilkeston community college on day release.

Fellow apprentice Luke Johnson (19) from Allestree, who works for Darley Abbey Construction and also attended Ilkeston college came second in the junior section of the regional competition.   Both Jack, Luke and fellow apprentice Bobby Parkes (19) from Mapperley, who works for CSR Construction, also scored highly in the regional college’s regional Skillbuild competition and are waiting to find out if they will progress further in the competition.

Head of Construction Eileen Swan said: “We have a great track record in these prestigious competitions and are delighted with the results achieved by all three of our top apprentices at the Ilkeston college.

“The competition results reflect the high quality of the learning experience for apprentices and full time students in our Construction Academy both at Ilkeston and at the Roundhouse college.

“It also shows just how committed local businesses are committed to the structured apprenticeship training programmes – ensuring their apprentices attend day release with us and giving them time off to take part in these regional competitions.”
