A borough convenience store and Post Office is through to the finals of the Independent Achievers Academy (IAA awards) and the winners will be announced at the IAA gala dinner in London on 22 November.

The One Stop franchise store at 24 Derby Road, Draycott, Derby, DE72 3NJ, has reached the final in the Responsible Retailing category.

The convenience store opened in a former pub five years ago and Draycott Post Office moved to the store in April 2017 and Post Office opening hours more than doubled.

Postmaster Vip Measuria takes retailing and responsibility to the community and staff very seriously and ensures the best ways of working and processes are followed.

It is illegal to sell alcohol to anyone who is under 18, or anyone who is drunk or for an adult to buy alcohol for someone who is under age.  The law requires staff to check ID to make sure that someone is over the age of 18.

Draycott One Stop & Post Office is also part of the Challenge 25 and anyone who is over 18, but looks under 25, are asked to carry acceptable ID when they want to buy alcohol. This initiative is run by the Retail of Alcohol Standards Group, which represents alcohol retailers.

In addition, Mr Measuria and his staff make a note of every time someone is asked for their ID and any refusals and he produces daily reports to help focus minds to ensure that staff are consistently asking for ID.

Mr Measuria, said: “I am very community-minded. Running a shop I have responsibility to the community around me and customers appreciate that I take my responsibilities seriously. I am really pleased to have reached the finals of the IAA award.”

The shop has working CCTV which can also help with the welfare of the community. Mr Measuria is happy to share footage with the relevant authorities when crime has taken place in the vicinity of the store.

Mr Measuria is very methodical so he makes sure that fridge and freezer temperatures are taking throughout the day to make sure that food is stored at the correct temperature.  Best before dates of produced is carefully checked by staff to ensure produce is not out of date.

The store is very proactive with any product recall notices and as well as displaying posters, recalled products are also featured on the store’s social media to help spread awareness.

Post Office has been involved with the Independent Achievers Academy (IAA) since 2013.  It is a business development programme which enables motivated retailers to grow their sales and profits by following expert advice, including Post Office guidance on great customer service.

Retailers benchmark themselves against all 12 categories and the best performers become the ‘top 100’ retailers. The top 100 are all visited and independently scored to create a shortlist for the awards and there are 33 finalists in various categories in the IAA awards.
