Erewash Labour opposes HS2

Published on: Tuesday, 29th January 2019

Erewash Labour Party has passed a motion opposing the construction of HS2.

Party members have campaigned against the route of HS2 and recently debated the HS2 project at a meeting of Labour Members which took place on 18th January at Sawley Memorial Hall.

The text of motion passed was: “Erewash Labour opposes HS2, in particular investment in HS2b. We believe in investing in the railways and endorse the Labour party commitment to renationalisation and electrification.”

Catherine Atkinson, Chair of Erewash Labour Party and the Parliamentary Candidate welcomed the vote and pledged to continue to campaign on the issue in the Council and Parliamentary elections.  She said “It’s down to the failure of our local Conservative politicans that Long Eaton is the only major town in the country that is severed by HS2. They have failed to stand up for our community against HS2. They do not deserve to represent the people of Erewash and we will do all we can to ensure they are voted out at the next election. HS2 is a colossal mistake that can still be stopped if we act now.”

Catherine has written to hundreds of households along the route.  In the letter she says:

“Dear resident,

I recently met with local residents impacted by HS2. They were very upset at the lack of information and communication from HS2 and did not consider that any meaningful effort has been made to get people to respond on the consultation currently taking place on HS2's recent Environmental Impact Assessment. This Assessment demonstrates that the effects will be even worse than we feared.

Erewash Labour is opposed to the route of HS2 which is due to divide Long Eaton. The costs are increasing and we believe that the money could be better spent on other infrastructure projects, like honouring the Government's broken promise to electrify the Midland Mainline.

The homes of over 300 residents in Long Eaton are due to be demolished to make way for the 19-metre-high viaduct and no compensation is being offered to residents who live right next to it. The Conservatives are putting out leaflets claiming 'credit' for the viaduct, but unlike the Conservative MP for Erewash, we do not consider that the concrete viaduct will be "an iconic tourist attraction".

We are very concerned about the major traffic congestion throughout Long Eaton, Sawley, Wilsthorpe and Sandiacre that will occur during nearly a decade of construction as well as the wildlife habitats that will be destroyed.

HS2 was not due to come through Long Eaton. It is now coming through Long Eaton after the Conservative MP supported the campaign to change its previous route. We are disappointed that she has refused to campaign with us against it going through Long Eaton. We are listening to residents and making the case at a local and national level that HS2 should be stopped.

Please respond to the consultation on HS2 which closes on 21st December 2018. You can submit a response online at

We also need residents to vote Labour at the local elections next May and the general election whenever that may be so we have a Labour Council and a Labour MP willing to stand up for the people of Erewash and against HS2.

Join us in saying NO to HS2.”
