Maggie Throup, Member of Parliament for Erewash, has welcomed the Tips Bill coming into law which will undoubtedly benefit hospitality workers across Erewash.

The Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023, also known as the Tips Bill, received Royal Assent on 2 May 2023 and will help to ensure that workers in the hospitality industry receive the tips and gratuities given by customers, rather than businesses retaining them. The legislation will protect the rights of staff and will ensure that they receive their fair share of tips and gratuities.

Maggie said: “I was pleased to back the Tips Bill which will ensure fairness for hospitality workers across Erewash. As people face rising living costs, it is not right for employers to withhold tips from their hard-working employees.

“Thanks to this piece of legislation, whether it’s those pulling pints, serving in restaurants or delivering a pizza, this new law will ensure that staff receive their fair share of the tips, as well as customers having the confidence their money is going to those who deserve it.”

The Tips Bill was introduced as a Private Members Bill by Watford’s Dean Russell MP following several years campaigning for the change in law and had Government backing.

This law will ensure that tips, gratuities, and service charges will go to workers, rather than employers. Tips are intended to reward staff for hard work and good service, and they should be distributed fairly and transparently. The Government has made this clear since announcing its intention to legislate on this and confirming its support for this Private Members’ Bill.
