Extra support in Erewash for people with multiple and complex needs

Derby-based organisation Derventio Housing Trust is part of a new programme to help people with multiple and complex needs towards and into work.

Opportunity and Change works with people who have experience of substance misuse, repeat offending, mental ill health, domestic violence or homelessness. Participants in the scheme have a full assessment of their needs before being assigned a personal Navigator to provide personalised advice and support.

Opportunity and Change is part of Building Better Opportunities, an England-wide programme combining funding from the European Social Fund and the Big Lottery Fund. The partnership across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire is led by Framework Housing Association. Derventio Housing Trust is one of several local partners with a range of experience of working with people with multiple complex needs.

Sarah Hernandez, Managing Director of Derventio Housing Trust, said: “This project will reach people who are on the fringes of our society. It will help them to overcome and address the barriers and issues that are preventing them from being active and engaged members of the community. This will not only lead to improvements in the lives of individuals, but will also bring considerable savings to the public purse.”

As one of the local partners of the Derbyshire and Nottingham programme, Derventio will provide support to people in areas including the Erewash and Amber Valleys.

The project will target those hardest to reach and furthest from the labour market. This includes people living in pockets of deprivation and certain rural localities, as well as people from BAME communities. As part of the project’s overall impact, it is expected to break cycles of child poverty, poor educational attainment, neglect, poor mental health and low self-esteem that lead in adulthood to unemployment, substance misuse, offending and repetitive negative life experiences.
