Fair play – it’s back! (Charter Fair official opening 21st October)

Published on: Thursday, 14th October 2021

Ilkeston Charter Fair – one of the oldest and largest street fairs in Europe – returns for its 769th year and will once again be given its ceremonial opening on Thursday 21st October when the Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Donna Briggs, will ‘ring the bell’.

The ringing of the bell is the official signal that this year’s Charter Fair is underway and it will be an extra special moment this year as the borough welcomes back the fair after its cancellation last year due to the pandemic.

This historic occasion will launch the 2021 Charter Fair from Wednesday 20th October to Saturday 23rd October when Ilkeston town centre will again be transformed into a colourful spectacle as the rides and stalls pack into the Market Place and surrounding streets.

The traditional ceremony will be held on Thursday 21st October and, as always, will include a reading of the original 1252 Charter by Erewash Borough Council’s Chief Executive Jeremy Jaroszek, which will be witnessed by the showmen and local residents to welcome the return of the fair.
