A man has been charged, and four others arrested, after an investigation into a series of burglaries and attempted burglaries.

Over the last two weeks, police officers have received numerous reports from the Borrowash area as well as outlying suburbs of Derby - those being Chaddesden and Chellaston.

The South Neighbourhood Acquisitive Crime Team, a unit dedicated to investigating burglaries and robberies, have been investigating the incidents and have made a number of arrests.

One of those arrested, Reece Wilson, 21, from Derby, has now been charged with 16 alleged offences:

  • Theft of a motor vehicle
  • Eight counts of burglary (non-dwelling)
  • Vehicle interference
  • Two counts of attempt burglary (dwelling)
  • Two counts of attempt theft from a motor vehicle
  • Two counts of assault emergency worker.

He appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on 4th May and was remanded into custody.

Two teenage boys, aged 15 and 17, and two men, aged 18 and 19, have been arrested on suspicion of numerous offences including burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, attempted burglary and attempted theft from a motor vehicle. They have all been bailed pending further enquiries.

Detective Sergeant Louise Munday, of the South Neighbourhood Acquisitive Crime Team, said: “We recognise the personal impact that burglaries and attempted burglaries have on people when their privacy is invaded in this way.

“We have a team dedicated to looking into these offences and urge anyone who has any information to come forward and speak to us.”

Residents are being reminded to ensure their car and house doors and windows are kept locked and to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police.

Other steps homeowners can take include:

  • Keeping valuables out of sight and out of reach of cat flaps, letterboxes, downstairs doors and windows.
  • Use outdoor security lighting.
  • Make your home look occupied when you are out – draw your curtains, leave a lamp on or leave a radio playing.
  • If it will be dark before you get home, set your lights on timers.
  • Consider fitting a burglar alarm - make sure it is installed properly by a reputable firm and is working. Also remember to set it before you leave home, or if you’re going to sleep.
  • Keep gates, garages, sheds or outbuildings secure.
  • What’s in your garden that could potentially aid a burglar?  Lock away ladders and gardening tools to prevent them being used to access your home.
  • Never leave a spare key outside of your house – burglars know the usual hiding spots.
  • Consider installing a video doorbell or CCTV to help you know who is outside your property.
