A man who died after a fire at a flat in Long Eaton has been named as 51 year old Peter Jeffries who came from the town.

Mr Jeffries sadly passed away in hospital after the fire at a Lynden Avenue flat on Saturday 22nd June.   Response teams from the Police and Derbyshire Fire & Rescue were called at 5.40am, that day, to reports of a fire in which someone was trapped.

Firefighters from the town arrived to face a well developed blaze in the first floor property, and used breathing apparatus to gain access, rescuing one male casualty who had suffered serious injuries.  He was handed into the care of doctors at the scene and taken by ambulance to hospital where he lost his battle with life having suffered burn related injuries.

A 54-year-old woman and a 51-year-old man were arrested in connection with the alleged incident, and remained in police custody until Tuesday 25th June when they were released on bail.

DI Steve Shaw, who is leading the investigation, said: “Although we initially launched a murder investigation, in relation to the case, we always keep an open mind as to the circumstances surrounding such incidents.

“Our detectives will continue to work on this very complex investigation and we will issue further updates as they become available.”
