Open Gardens Event raises over £1100 for charity

Organisers of an annual garden event in Sawley have expressed their grateful thanks after another successful year of activities.

The 20th anniversary of the Sawley Garden Trail was celebrated on Sunday 14th July, in which local residents of Sawley and the Dales wth a garden, largely or small, complete or work in progress were invited to open them up.

Over the last two decades, over 50 gardens have been opened each year, some for  an occasional year, many opening annually to display their beauty to their visitors.  Thousands of pounds have been raised by Garden holders in aid of their own individual charities, selling tea and cakes, raffles, bric a brac and plants.  The months of work in preparing their gardens for their visitors cannot be measured with incredible displays every year.

In the wake of this year's event, spokesperson Betty Thompson offered thanks to everyone who helped with preparation work which she said contributed to a day of resounding success.

She also said that £1159 had been raised with programme and quiz sales raising £667 and added that one local resident counted as many as 137 visitors to her garden.

Organisers plan to meet again in early January 2020 at St. Mary's to prepare for next year's event.
