Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Angelique Foster has secured more than £1.3m from the Home Office to increase the safety of domestic abuse victims.

The Commissioner successfully bid for a share of a £39m funding pot to invest in new intervention programmes working directly with offenders to address their behaviour.

The funding, which amounts to £1,389,150 over the next two years, will see the roll- out of projects across Derby and Derbyshire designed to reduce domestic abuse offences and change the behaviour of perpetrators.  The schemes will also offer support to victims to ensure their safety.

Police and Crime Commissioner Angelique Foster said: "I am pleased to have secured this extra funding for Derbyshire. This investment will enable us to intervene early to break the cycle of abuse and ensure perpetrators are held accountable for their actions before they escalate.

"Protecting victims of domestic abuse and stalking is a key priority in my Police and Crime Plan. These programmes will build on the excellent work already underway to manage risk and address the root causes of offending to prevent future harm."

The Home Office is supporting 50 projects across England and Wales over the next two years to protect victims of abuse and stalking.

It said many domestic abusers are repeat offenders with 83 per cent of male offenders repeating their offences within a six-month period.

Behaviour change programmes are paramount to protecting victims from further harm and the government has already awarded more than £41m to Police and Crime Commissioners to fund similar projects since 2020.
