The Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Sue Beardsley, has been busy this past year supporting the work of Action for Children in Derbyshire and Rainbows Hospice, two local charities which support vulnerable and sick children, and has raised an incredible £4,000.
The main fundraising activity during the year was the very successful ‘Knit a Nipper’ project which alone has raised £2,305. The knitting project received huge support from a wide variety of individuals and businesses with knitters from the borough and further afield helping to raise awareness, with even the Prime Minister having his own nipper delivered to Westminster by Erewash MP Maggie Throup.
Donations were also received from the Ilkeston Methodist Church following fundraising events organised by its members.
The Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Sue Beardsley, said: “I am absolutely delighted with the final amount raised for these two very worthy causes but what has been evident is the community spirit within Erewash with everyone wishing to help raise funds.
I wondered whether the ‘Knit a Nipper ‘project would take off but with the hard work and support of Rachael Spence and her team of happy knitters this was a very popular fundraiser. I would like to say a very big thank you to all who offered to promote and sell the knitted creations.”
Due to the cancellation of this year’s Mayor-making ceremony, in light of the coronavirus crisis, Councillor Beardsley will continue her role as Mayor of Erewash for the forthcoming civic year.
Her chosen charities will be the Treetops Hospice in Risley and The Stroke Association which has active clubs in Ilkeston and Long Eaton.
