Commemoration and reflection of World War 1 in West Hallam

Published on: Wednesday, 4th June 2014

As people will be aware, 2014 is the centenary of the commencement of the First World War and this year will provide an opportunity for commemoration and reflection.

Several events are being organised in the Parish of West Hallam to give people the chance to commemorate the Centenary of World War I in varying ways. The names of those men who went to war and many paying the ultimate sacrifice are listed on the War Memorials of both West Hallam and Mapperley Colliery and a booklet is being put together to try and put the stories behind the names listed. Officials are appealing for any living relatives to get in touch to see if they can help provide some of the background history, whilst there is also an invite for them to attend an event when the booklet is officially launched.

Any relatives who would like to help gather this information are asked to contact the Clerk to the Parish Council, Sue Dunkley, as soon as possible. Sue can be contacted by telephone 0115 8498542 / mobile 07854 591073 or by email to contact(at)westhallam-pc.org.uk.
