AFC Wulfrunians 1-3 Long Eaton United – Saturday 5 May
Midland Football League Premier Division

The start of the 2017-2018 football season was a difficult and arduous one for Long Eaton United, but as the new structures were established, as new and old players gelled, the Blues began to find their feet and climb the table.

Over recent weeks and months, there was a very real chance that the borough club could take a place in the Top 10 come the season end, which, given how things started, would be quite some achievement.

Some results put that status in jeopardy, but others helped settle things back down and after the final game of the season away at AFC Wulfunians on Saturday, it was confirmed that the Blues could finish no lower than tenth as other clubs round out their arguably delayed set of fixtures.

However, to get an end-of-season win, Long Eaton United had to come from behind.  Midway through the first half, the hosts took the lead at Castlecroft Road but with five minutes to go before the break, the Blues were back in it after captain Andy Todd led from the front to find the equaliser.

For the second half, the Blues management made a change that saw development player James Shaw make his first team debut.  This game swung towards Long Eaton as the final fifteen minutes were played out.

Zak Goodson was the man of the moment, as he has been on frequent occasions this season, the teenaged marksman meeting a well worked cross to head home and he wrapped up the win, wrapped up the season and secured the Blues in the top ten with a team third, and his second goal in the final minute of regular time.
