Long Eaton Police Officers have taken to social media to issue a reminder as to how e-scooters can and cannot be used.
The move comes as the prevalence of such items increases, in line with official trials of their use in both Derby and Nottingham, and the ease with which they can be purchased.
Safer Neighbourhood Team officers said that it was understood that buying an e-scooter can be tempting, especially as popular retailers stock them, but it was stressed that they cannot be ridden on a UK public road, cycle path or pavement.
It was also clarified that the ONLY place that an e-scooter can be used is on private land, adding that the items are classified as Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLLEVs) so they are treated as motor vehicles and subject to the same legal requirements such as MOTs, licensing, tax and insurance.
A warning was offered regarding the standing of Section 165A of the Road Traffic Act 1988, which allows the Police to seize any motor vehicle being used on a road which does not have required documentation.
