Report: After two weeks of frozen lakes, we managed to fish the first Nisa Midweek Open Match of 2026 this week, but still had to endure quite awful conditions, for, except for around an hour around mid-match, the cold and strong south-easterly wind was accompanied by rain showers.

As the turnout was lower than usual, the payout was to the overall winner and then (defaulting) to the top weight on each bank of the lake. In the horrible conditions, only four anglers “bothered the scales”, although I believe all bar one caught fish.

Stu Jones drew the only peg fully facing the wind, B3 by the car park. He started fishing with the bomb and bread, which produced one carp, before switching to bomb and corn. From then on, he caught carp steadily to the end of the match, and despite being overweight in one net (knocked back 1-14) he recorded a weight of 115-10 for a clear win.

Pete Stockwin on B12 also enjoyed an excellent day, and again, fishing with the bomb and corn, several carp found their way into his nets to total 58-15 for second place. This won the B bank pool.

On peg A6, with two hours to go, Dave Alewood had not had a bite. At that point, he switched from bread to double corn hook-bait and caught six nice carp for a weight of 39-07, which won the A bank pool.

John Adamson was the remaining “weigher” with a four carp catch on the bomb and corn for 28-03 for fourth place.

Many thanks to Stu for his assistance (and all the lifting) at the weigh-in.

NB. Nisa Opens are held most Wednesdays on Lake Two at Makins Fishery (see Facebook “Nisa – midweek open matches” to book a place).
