Incident of needle spiking in Long Eaton remains under investigation

An incident of needle spiking in Long Eaton continues to be under investigation despite four others in the county having been brought to an end.

Derbyshire Police have received a number of reports of women being covertly injected with drugs in what is being described as "needle spiking".  The news comes after Nottinghamshire made national headlines over incidents stemming back to early September 2021.

Although society is aware of spikings of drinks, in which offenders drop tablets into women's drinks in bars and clubs, hypodermic spikings, equally surreptitiously, and therefore without the victim noticing until it is too late, have been described as a "disturbing new development".

Police and Crime Commissioner Angelique Foster detailed the extent of investigations by the Derbyshire Force at a specially convened meeting on the subject of violence towards women which sought to give assurance to the public and give those attending a chance to ask relevant questions to Chief Constable Rachel Swann.

During the meeting, PCC Foster said two reports of needle spiking were being investigated but then clarified that there had been a total of five incidents, four having now been closed due to a lack of evidence, but that one remained open having occurred in Long Eaton on Sunday 31st October.

Ms Foster said that no arrests had yet been made and that enquiries were continuing.
