An Ilkeston man, who breached a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) by refusing to leave a café in the town centre, has been sentenced at Derby Magistrates Court.

Liam Meenan entered the branch of Costa coffee on Bath Street, Ilkeston just after 3.20pm on Tuesday 28 March. When staff asked him to leave, as is the terms of his CBO, Meenan became aggressive and remained in the café.

Appearing at Derby Magistrates Court, the 37-year-old admitted breaching the order and was handed a four-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.

Meenan also admitted to a further, previous breach of his order and Public Order Offence at the same time and was also given a four-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.

Police Constable Beth Richardson, from Ilkeston Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “This is a great example of a community working together with officers after Meenan breached his order.

“The staff at Costa Coffee were aware of the terms of his CBO and knew that Meenan had to leave as soon as he was instructed to do so, so as soon as he refused, they contacted us, and we quickly arrested him.

“Criminal Behaviour Orders are there not just to protect the community but also the person who is the subject of the order, however, if that order is breached, as happened here, we will act swiftly to arrest that individual and put them before the courts.”
