Victoria Park and Rutland Sports Park in Ilkeston will look a whole lot brighter in the evenings following investment from the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UK SPF) to improve lighting in these spaces.
Victoria Park is set to receive 26 heritage style lights which will be in keeping with the current style of the space. These lights will help to brighten up currently unlit paths, improving access to the park during hours of darkness and helping park visitors feel safer.
Meanwhile, Rutland Sports Park is due to benefit from eight new lights which will illuminate a connection from Rutland Sports Pavillion to the play area and car park, as well as site access through Oakwell Drive.
The total funding for the two projects is £166,000. The UK SPF was initially launched by the Government in 2022, and it aims to provide local authorities with funding for communities, places, businesses, people and skills in order to level up people’s pride in the places they live.
Councillor Mark Alfrey, Lead Member for Environment, said: “We are delighted that these new lights will allow residents to feel more comfortable using these paths when the dark nights set in. Making sure residents feel safe in our local parks is crucial to making Erewash welcoming, and we are grateful that the UK SPF funding we secured will assist with this.”
