Borough council pulls out the stops to fix bus shelters

Vandalised and neglected bus shelters are to undergo repairs across Erewash as the borough council launches a huge mission to get them back up to scratch.

The authority has set aside a £30,000-a-year budget for the initiative – plus an extra £20,000 in the first year after identifying the most dilapidated ones.

The maintenance fund will see broken windows replaced and graffiti removed. It will also mean sorry-looking shelters get a good clean.

Cllr Curtis Howard, who is the council’s Lead Member for Town Centres, Regeneration and Planning, said: “Every day in Erewash, thousands of people use buses to get where they need to go – to work, to school, to shop in our town centres. The elderly, people on the lowest incomes, and mothers with young children all disproportionately rely on buses to go about their daily business. 

“Those people deserve better. So we’ve restored bus shelter maintenance – a simple and affordable fix to benefit local people, and show some more pride in the look and feel of our streets.”
