Erewash Borough Council officials have taken delivery of thousands of food waste bins and kitchen caddies, ready for the start of collections later this year.

From 31st March 2026, councils will be required to collect food waste from all homes every week as part of new Simpler Recycling legislation.

The change is part of the government’s plan to make it easier for residents to recycle, improve recycling rates and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Borough council staff began delivering to households across the borough from Monday 19th January, and were expected to take around five to six weeks to complete their rounds, with bins deposited at the front of properties.

The deliveries will include a green outdoor food waste bin, and, inside, a smaller, grey caddy for use in the kitchen to collect and transfer food waste. There will also be a roll of caddy liners, an information leaflet and a house number bin sticker.

A statement from Erewash Borough Council urged residents to read the leaflet, as it contains everything about recycling food waste, but also said that the new green food waste bins should NOT be put out before 30th March, as they would not be collected until after that date.

Those who live in a block of flats or other property with communal bins will receive their food waste bin later in the year.
