Commemorate VJ Day in Erewash

Residents are invited to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VJ Day at events on Friday 15th August.

Victory over Japan Day recognises the day Japan announced its surrender to the Allied Forces, marking the end of World War Two.

The Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Harry Atkinson, will be attending a commemorative service at the war memorial in Long Eaton at 10:45am, while the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Greg Maskalick, will be present for the service at the cenotaph in Ilkeston at 10:45am. Both services have been organised by the Royal British Legion.

Beacon lighting events, organised by Erewash Borough Council, will take place at Victoria Park, Ilkeston and outside Long Eaton Town Hall at 8pm. The events will include performances from 1940’s singers. There will also be a parade from the Long Eaton War Memorial at 6.45pm.

The Royal British Legion will then host a Party in the Field on Saturday 16th August from 12pm to 6pm in Ilkeston. The celebrations will include a family day with food, refreshments, games, music, face painting and a bouncy castle for the children.

On Friday 29th August, Erewash Museum will be hosting the War Time Variety Show to mark this anniversary with lots of singing, dancing and music. Those that want to get creative to celebrate the 80th anniversary can get involved with the museum’s workshops to create their own part of a bunting which will be on display at the War Time Variety Show. The workshops will take place on 15th, 16th, 21st, 22nd and 28th August – booking is not required and taking part is free.
