A local community interest company has expressed absolute delight after it secured funding from The National Lottery Community Fund.
Our Crafty Place CiC will use the money to continue a popular crafting group project into 2026.
Crafting Connections grew from a successful pilot that showed just how much the community values inclusive, creative spaces. Thanks to this funding, the group can carry on offering free, weekly drop-in craft sessions in Ilkeston – a welcoming place to craft, chat and connect.
These sessions support wellbeing, reduce isolation and bring people of all ages and backgrounds together. Whether it’s crafting, upcycling, trying eco-friendly skills, or simply enjoying a cuppa and conversation, there’s something for everyone.
The funding also enables the provision of experienced tutors to lead the session. Spokesperson Viv Smith said: "This will give our community the chance to learn from some of the very best artists in Derbyshire!"
The project especially benefits people facing loneliness, low income, long-term health conditions, or those seeking gentle, meaningful ways to meet others. Importantly, the community has shaped this project – through conversations with local residents, carers, social prescribers and community workers.
By reusing and upcycling materials and linking with local green spaces, Crafting Connections also helps care for our environment while building pride in the local area.
Viv concluded: "A huge thank you to the National Lottery Community Fund and all the players of the Lottery, and to our amazing volunteers, who make all of this possible. Together, we’re creating a safe, caring and creative space for everyone."
