Derby College Group (DCG) has officially unveiled its newly redeveloped Automotive Academy, marking a significant investment in the future of automotive skills training in Derby and beyond.

The College recently welcomed employers, apprentices, and community partners to an Automotive Employer Engagement Event at its Roundhouse campus. Attendees enjoyed an exclusive tour of the state-of-the-art workshop facilities and heard about the College’s expanding apprenticeship offer and future curriculum developments.

Gareth Sullivan-Pearce, Team Manager, Motor Vehicle at DCG, addressed the audience at the event and shared the College’s bold ambitions for automotive education. He said: "The Automotive Academy at Derby College is more than just a new building; it represents a bold step forward for automotive education in our region. We’re committed to providing a modern, inclusive learning environment where students gain the skills and knowledge needed for a rapidly evolving industry. The feedback from our employer partners has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re excited to continue working together to shape the future of automotive skills training.”

The new Academy offers a comprehensive curriculum for full-time students, adult learners, and apprentices, including qualifications from Level 1 through to Level 3, covering light vehicle maintenance, service and repair, and emerging green automotive technologies.

DCG’s growing network of employer partnerships continues to play a vital role in developing industry-ready talent. Longstanding collaborators are actively involved in providing students with hands-on learning, work experience opportunities, and valuable career insights, ensuring students leave college with the practical skills and industry awareness needed for success.

Rachel Weatherston, Operations Manager, Engineering Apprenticeships at DCG, highlighted the importance of these collaborations. She said: “Events like this are vital for us to listen to employers’ perspectives and make sure we’re delivering training that truly meets the needs of the sector.

"Our apprenticeship programmes are designed not only to meet national standards but to go beyond them — developing the practical skills, professional behaviours, and confidence apprentices need to thrive in their roles. We value the relationships we have with local employers and the difference they make to our students’ futures.”

Among those attending was James Godfrey, owner of a family-run car sales business established in 1981. The business currently employs James’s son Ben, a Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician apprentice, with younger son George following in his footsteps.

“We’ve worked with Derby College for years and it’s fantastic to see this new investment in the facilities. Apprenticeships have made a huge difference to our business, bringing new skills into the workshop while giving young people a great start in the industry.” said James.

Current students also shared their experiences, including Storm Rogers-Davies, who recently switched from an equine course to the Level 3 Automotive qualification after discovering her passion for mechanics through working on cars with her father.

“I’ve learnt so much already and the tutors have been so supportive. It’s such a hands-on course and I love the practical side. Moving to automotive was the best decision I’ve made.”

Apprentice Lucas Hitchcock, studying for his Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (Light Vehicle) Level 3 qualification while working in Duffield, added: “It’s been a brilliant experience. I’ve recently been learning about electric vehicles, car diagnostics and troubleshooting sales issues. The new workshop here at the College is really impressive — it’s great to learn in an environment that mirrors what we see in the workplace.”

The Automotive Academy is part of Derby College Group’s ongoing investment in its estate and curriculum. Future plans include introducing new qualifications such as the IMI Level 2 Technical Occupational Entry in Automotive Care and a Level 1 Award in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) Awareness, ensuring students and apprentices are prepared for the technological advancements reshaping the sector.

Gareth Sullivan-Pearce concluded: “We’re proud to be working with such forward-thinking employers and talented apprentices. Together, we’re not just teaching skills, we’re helping to shape the future of the automotive industry in Derbyshire and beyond.”
