Erewash Borough Council launches £25 garden bin deal

Green-fingered residents looking forward to the end of winter can get garden waste collected by Erewash Borough Council over the coming year for just £25 – but need to spring into action before a March 31st deadline for the money-saving deal.

The authority launched its “early bird” offer for the fortnightly brown bin collections on Monday 27th January.

The garden waste service paused over the winter but local people are being reminded it resumes in February – meaning those who signed up for it last year will still receive up to four collections before the current subscriptions end.

Brown bin collections restart in Ilkeston and surrounding areas in the week beginning Monday 17th February. Around Long Eaton, brown bins will resume being collected the following week – from Monday 24th February.

The next subscription period runs from 1st April to 31st March 2026. 

Councillor Mark Alfrey, who is Erewash’s Lead Member for Environment, said: “The £37 fee for the coming year compared to what other authorities ask for is highly competitive. Among our neighbouring councils those that also charge for garden waste collections have an average fee of £46. Across England the typical cost is £56, according to a report last year in The Telegraph.

“Erewash’s £25 early bird offer is something I encourage residents to take advantage of. It’s easy to renew or sign up for the first time by visiting the Erewash Borough Council website. The simplest way to sign up is online. But residents can also get the discounted rate by phoning our customer service team on 0115 907 2244 – or by popping into town hall receptions during opening hours.”

Erewash was one of a dwindling number of councils that still collected garden waste for free until funding cuts forced it to reluctantly bring in a charge last year.
