Erewash elections 2023 - a guide

On Thursday 4th May 2023, Erewash residents went to the polls for the borough, and in some areas, parish council elections.  Breadsall residents were also asked to answer a specific planning related question as part of a local referendum.   Erewash Sound brings you a one-stop guide with what you need to know. On this page, we present the details of borough and parish election candidates, and the results as they were announced at the count which began at 10am on Friday 5th May.  The structure of the day saw borough votes counted in the morning and parish votes in the afternoon.

ABOUT THE 2023 ELECTIONS: Although there were also parish council elections taking place in some areas, predominantly, Erewash residents went to the polls on Thursday 4th May to elect 47 councillors (of 118 candidates from four political parties plus nine independents) to serve on the borough council across a total of 19 wards.

VOTER TURNOUT: The turnout was 33.72 % overall. 24.39% voted in person. 71.46% were via postal votes - up by around 65%.

PHOTO ID: Data released by Erewash Borough Council shows the number of people who brought ID to a polling station for local elections on May 4th.

It shows that 99.9% of electors met the newly introduced voter ID requirements with 16,913 electors voting at 54 polling stations across the Borough.

At the end of polling day 19 electors or 0.1% who tried to vote in a polling station were not given a ballot paper because they did not meet the new rules.

The figures also show while 41 electors were initially turned away, 22 returned with acceptable ID and were able to vote.

The next planned elections in Erewash will be the Police and Crime Commissioner elections in May 2024, and it is anticipated that subject to legislation, there will also be elections for a Mayor to lead a new Mayoral County Combined Authority for Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

A general election can be called anytime between now and January 2025.

Voter ID will be required for these elections and the Council would like to remind residents that they can register to vote and apply for a Voter Authority Certificate should they need one at www.gov.uk.
