Erewash MP slams Nigel Farage at Prime Minister's Questions

Erewash MP Adam Thompson, speaking previously in Parliament

Erewash MP Adam Thompson has challenged the Deputy Prime Minister about what he described as "the appalling state of maths education in England" and in doing so, took the opportunity to poke fun at Reform UK leader Nigel Farage.

Adam cited his experience as a former secondary school physics teacher and lecturer in engineering at the University of Nottingham to ask the Deputy Prime Minister what this government is doing to improve people’s maths skills, especially after people have left school.

He stated that he had come across an awful case recently of a 61 year-old man who believed he had found £7 billion worth of government spending, only for it to be found out to actually only be £27 million. Adam concluded that Mr. Farage was evidently unable to add up.

Over laughs and roars of fellow MPs, Angela Rayner responded that Adam had highlighted an important fact – that “Reform’s sums don’t add up.” She went on to elaborate that the government was pledging £136 million for adult education and “skills bootcamps”.

Adam said: "I asked Angela Rayner a very serious question about the state of maths in this country. It’s a chilling example to see a former city trader who’s now promising billions in tax cuts and extra spending – but has no idea how he’s going to pay for any of it. Perhaps that’s why Reform are trying to shut down all of Derbyshire’s adult education centres – including those in Cotmanhay and Long Eaton.”
