A fire investigation into the cause of a fire at Harrington Junior School in Long Eaton has concluded that the fire was accidental, most likely caused by hot works taking place on site as part of ongoing refurbishment.

Firefighters were first called to the fire shortly after 12noon on Thursday 28 May 2020.  The school was evacuated with everyone subsequently confirmed as safe and accounted for.

Crews from across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire attended the scene and worked throughout the night continuing to damp the fire down and extinguish any hot spots.

Two firefighters who sustained minor injuries at the scene have now been released from hospital and are recovering at home.

Group Manager Dean Gazzard, who was the officer in charge at the fire said: “Workers carrying out the refurbishment of the school did everything they could to contain the fire and prevent its spread before the arrival of Firefighters.  Fire crews worked in extreme heat and challenging conditions, but despite everyone’s efforts, the school was totally destroyed by the rapidly spreading fire.

“The Service sends its thoughts to everyone affected by the loss of Harrington School. Schools are at the heart of every community and we know the consequences of this fire will be felt heavily across the communities of Long Eaton.”

Firefighters remain on scene damping down hot spots.

A brief statement was posted on the school website during the height of the blaze - it said: "Our beautiful, vibrant school is on fire.  No children in school today.  All safe.  Emergency services attending.  Please stay away to help.  I am heartbroken."

Members of the public broke social distancing requirements to visit and view the scene as it unfolded.  Meanwhile, Derby Road was closed in both directions with congestion caused on both Petersham and Wilsthorpe Road as a result.

MP Maggie Throup has issued the following statement in the wake of the incident:  “Following the devastating fire at Harrington Juniors, I have received a situation update from the Chief Fire Officer and have also spoken to the Local Education Authority and the Secretary of State.

“The main focus now is to make the site safe for pupils returning to schools on the same campus in the coming weeks and to begin the process of rebuilding Harrington as soon as possible.”
