Police officers placed a cordon across Ilkeston Market Place during the early hours of Sunday morning following a serious assault.
The area was divided by blue and white Police tape between the Town Hall and St. Mary's Church after officers received reports of an incident at 2:10am on 1st June.
A man was taken to hospital with injuries described as "serious". Businesses inside of the cordon covering the Bath Street end of the Market Place were unable to trade.
The cordon was expected to remain in place for some considerable time leading to pedestrians being told to expect disruption and a need to take alternative routes where possible. A heavy Police presence was maintained at the scene.
