Police officers from the Long Eaton safer Neighbourhood Team have attended a safety and welfare event at Sawley Junior School to talk to parents and students about the importance of road safety.

Children were told that wearing a seat belt not only helps protect your safety, but also helps protect the safety of others.

It was made clear that only one person is allowed in each seat fitted with a seat belt. and that the same seat belt should never be used across two or more passengers.

The session also detailed that, it was the responsibility of any passenger over the age of 14 to ensure that a seat belt is worn, and that failure to do so could result in a fine.

A statement issued on social media said: "Children under 135cm tall or under 12 years old must be in the correct car seat for their height and weight. A driver is responsible for any passengers under the age of 14 years old. You can be fined £500 if a child under 14 years old isn't wearing a seat belt or if a child under 135cm tall or under 12 years old is not in the correct car seat."
