Families can enjoy a modern and accessible new play area that has officially opened in Ilkeston following a refurbishment.

Larklands Play Area in Ilkeston was opened by the Mayor of Erewash, Councillor John Sewell, on Tuesday 21st June 2022.

The refurbishment was made possible with external funding of £70,000 from FCC Communities Foundation, with the remaining cost being met by Erewash Borough Council.

The play area, located off Heathfield Avenue, features a range of modern play equipment that is accessibility for children with disabilities. It has an access path, seating and safety gates.

Pupils from Larklands Infant School and Kensington Junior School were invited to the event as a thank you for their help with the initial consultation process, which helped secure the funding.

Councillor Paul Maginnis, Lead Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “The new play area at Larklands looks fantastic and it was great to see children from local schools trying it out and enjoying the state-of-the-art equipment. Having outdoor spaces for children to play in Erewash is vital and the council works hard to make sure these areas can be accessed by all children.”

The Mayor of Erewash, Councillor John Sewell, said: “It was a delight to see what has been done with the play area and to meet those involved in making it possible. I am sure lots of families will enjoy the play for a long time to come. I would like to thank the FCC Communities Foundation for the funding which enabled the refurbishment to take place.”
