Nottingham has been named one of the UK’s leading cities for business growth potential in new research from financial services provider Trade Nation, which shows that 95.14% of businesses based in the city are expected to grow. This outstanding figure places Nottingham second in the UK, ahead of major centres including Cardiff, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The study, which analysed data from Crunchbase for the UK’s 100 most populated locations, found that of the 1,953 companies headquartered in Nottingham, 1,858 were identified as very likely or likely to expand.

This strong performance also places Nottingham in the top ten cities for the total number of growth-ready companies, alongside London, Manchester and Birmingham, cementing its position as a major player in the national business landscape.

From pioneering life sciences and cutting-edge fintech to advanced manufacturing and the creative industries, Nottingham’s diverse economy provides fertile ground for businesses looking to succeed. The city’s strategic location in the heart of the country, exceptional transport connections, highly skilled talent pool and collaborative business community all contribute to its reputation as a place where companies can flourish.

Megan Powell Vreeswijk, Chief Executive of Marketing Nottingham & Nottinghamshire, said: “There has never been a better time to bring your business to Nottingham. This recognition reflects the city’s energy, ambition and ability to help companies thrive. Whether you’re a start-up looking for support or an established company planning your next phase of growth, Nottingham offers the perfect mix of innovation, connectivity and community to make it happen.”

Nationally, the study revealed that in 87% of the UK cities and towns analysed, at least 70% of local businesses are expected to grow. Nottingham’s 95.14% growth forecast places it firmly at the forefront of this trend, offering a compelling case for investment and expansion. The city’s appeal lies not only in its economic strengths but also in its vibrant cultural life, rich heritage, green spaces, leading universities and affordability, making it an attractive base for both business and talent.

As the UK economy faces uncertainty, Nottingham’s resilience and upward trajectory stand out. With a business community geared for growth, a supportive ecosystem, and the right mix of opportunity and lifestyle, the message is clear: now is the time to make Nottingham the home of your business.

This study used growth prediction data from Crunchbase.  Looking at the UK’s 100 most populated places, the data analysed the total number of companies against the number that are listed as either “likely” or “extremely likely” to experience growth by Crunchbase. All data is correct as of 14th May 2025.
