Ninja swords will be illegal to own from 1st August – and throughout July there will be a national amnesty.
Run by the government, the scheme is an opportunity for anyone who owns a Ninja sword to hand them in to designated police stations before the law changes.
Here in the Erewash area, those who possess the items can hand them in to the nearest amnesty point which is at St Mary’s Wharf Enquiry Office in Derby, DE1 3AB.
This is just one of the initiatives Police officers in Derbyshire are involved with, supporting the wide range of work done all year-round to tackle knife crime and serious violence.
A statement from Derbyshire Police said: "Tackling knife crime and serious violence is not just a matter of enforcement; and is not caused by isolated issues, it is a public health challenge, a moral imperative, and a community mission. These are national challenges with significant local consequences."
Anyone who bought or received a sword before 27th March and who is eligible is being offered compensation for handing their sword in with desk enquiry staff advising and guiding people through completing a form. Owners can also use a surrender bin without claiming compensation if required.
However, a stark warning has been issued to those who own a Ninja Sword with a strict period of 1st to 31st July being set to hand them in and, if eligible, claim compensation. Additionally, once the law changes, owning a sword will be illegal and owners will not be able to take part in the scheme.
