Police and Crime Commissioner welcomes the new Home Secretary's tough stance on law and order

Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Angelique Foster has welcomed the strong commitment to law and order outlined by new Home Secretary Suella Braverman this week.

Addressing a variety of issues at the Conservative Conference in Birmingham, Ms Braverman told delegates that police forces across the country would now be expected to attend the scene of every burglary – a policy Commissioner Angelique Foster said had been in place in Derbyshire for some time, and reaffirming her commitment to equip police with the full powers they need to protect the public, the Home Secretary promised to provide ‘common sense policing' that was ‘unashamedly and unapologetically' on the side of the ‘law-abiding majority'.

Commenting on the Home Secretary's statement, Angelique Foster said: "I welcome the robust national standards set out by the new Home Secretary this week which put ordinary, hard-working people at the very centre of law and enforcement.

"Many of the assurances given by the Home Secretary are already happening in Derbyshire – specifically the pledge for Police to attend all home burglaries. My Police and Crime Plan for Derbyshire, published last year, made burglary one of the key priorities to be tackled by the constabulary. The Chief Constable committed some time ago to attending every home burglary in Derbyshire and this will continue as part of our determination to secure justice and provide victims with the best possible response.

"Burglary is a distressing and intrusive crime that leaves a long-term impact on its victims. Our policing teams across Derbyshire are working hard to protect our communities and bring offenders to court. I will continue to support the Chief Constable by ensuring officers have the equipment, technology and support they need to deliver results.

"Neighbourhood Crime is a key priority in my Police and Crime Plan. As our extra police officers take to the streets, the force will be increasing the proactive work it undertakes to investigate these offences, punish those responsible and make our homes and our streets safer."
