A person who was by the side of a road watching an unauthorised car meet has suffered serious leg injuries.

The incident took place on Sunday night (5th) at around 7pm when a car hit the male victim near to the MFN Club at Shipley Gate.

A statement released by Derbyshire Police said that a 32 year old man was taken to hospital with multiple leg fractures, but clarified that the injuries were not thought to be life threatening.   Officers spoke to the driver of a red Toyota Yaris GR but said that no arrests were made.

Representatives from the Derbyshire Road Policing Unit added that videos had been in circulation on social media sites which showed the car leaving the road before ploughing into spectators on a grassy area next to the road.   A copy of the video is held by local Police.

A Facebook post described local car meets as "regaining some considerable popularity" during the Summer, and added that, whilst most were attended by genuine car enthusiasts, they were also seeing more "reckless driving performances in an effort to impress strangers".

It continued: "The investigation into this incident is ongoing but it may provide some food for thought as to whether these events are the right place for you, in particular, your children or family - many were in attendance tonight."

On Twitter, the comment was more direct. It said: "Folks, these meets are not somewhere to bring your children/families.  They continue to be proliferated by irresponsible unskilled drivers."

Over recent weeks, Erewash Sound received a report of a large procession of cars being driven erratically through Ilkeston from Kirk Hallam and Stanton towards Heanor.

Anyone with any information about the incident on Sunday 5th September, particularly CCTV footage, is being asked to contact Police on any of the following methods quoting incident reference number 896-050921
